I recently joined Gavin Glakas on Art School Live for a session called Painting the Colors of New Mexico in Fall. It was a pleasure to share my process for capturing the warm ochres, reds, and golden cottonwoods that define this season in the Southwest.
During the demo, I painted a backlit adobe scene and walked viewers through how I block in shapes, balance light and shadow, and use gridding to keep proportions accurate before moving on to a larger studio piece. We also explored how light plays off adobe walls and how those subtle contrasts create the distinctive glow of New Mexico.
If you missed it, the full video is available online — I hope it inspires you to bring a bit of New Mexico’s color and light into your own work.
